Ordering Bees

I ordered two packages of small cell bees from Wolk Creek Apiaries. They are located in eastern Tennessee.

The first decision I had to make was how many bees to order and what date to receive them.  This decision involved some calculation.  According to the British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture, Apiculture Factsheet #301, you need to place your package bees 4 to 6 weeks before the main nectar flow.

The flowering of the tulip poplar tree in our area is indicative of the main nectar flow.  According to Buddy's journal for the Piedmont, that took place around April 20.  Thus, by my calculations, the bees should arrive around March 6, 2013.  I asked for March 8 since it is a Friday.
