Catching the First Wild Swarm

On May 2, 2014, I caught a wild swarm in a bait box we located in the eastern chestnut tree.

The bait box was constructed from a Langstroth 8-frame medium deep box. According to an article by Cornell, it is about the optimum size for attracting bees. I cut a hole in the box as recommended and blocked it with a couple nails to keep out birds.

A similar box was placed in our walnut tree in the northwest pasture.

I placed the bees into one of the Warre Hive I designed from medium Langstroth boxes.

A couple days later, I retrieved the box and put it back into our tree.
